Bachelor of General Studies Program
A Flexible Degree Designed for Adults
While a bachelor’s degree can add significant value to a resume, it isn’t always easy for working professionals—especially those with families—to earn one. The University of Miami’s Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) Program solves the problem by offering a part-time degree program that is flexible, customizable, and allows adult students to complete their education on their own terms and around their own timetables.
Instead of learning within the confines of a traditional college major, BGS students choose an area of concentration, which allows them to map out their own course of study based on personal preferences, current occupations, and future career goals. The program’s flexible design encourages creative thought, critical analysis, and exposes students to a variety of social and scientific issues, which are the basis for a well-rounded education. The option to take a blend of daytime, evening, weekend, and online classes ensures that students can create a course schedule that fits their agenda and satisfies their personal and professional aspirations.
Length of Program: That depends on how many credits a student has already earned when they enter the program. A minimum of 120 credits are needed to earn the degree, and the last 45 must be earned in the BGS program. Students who have previously completed an associate degree, or who earned nearly enough credits for a two-year degree at other institutions, typically earn their BGS degree in 2-3 years. BGS advisers provide plenty of support and guidance regarding coursework selection to ensure that students earn their credits in an efficient manner, and in a timeframe that won’t interfere with work or family obligations.
Tuition & Fees: BGS students are able to complete their studies at a rate significantly lower than standard pricing. Tuition is $800 per credit. BGS students attend in part-time status, so student fees are calculated at roughly half the price a full-time student would pay.
Program Format and Location: BGS students may attend day, evening, or weekend classes at the University of Miami’s Coral Gables campus. Online classes are now available as well, which have been developed by University of Miami faculty with the BGS student in mind.
Financial Assistance Options: Students who meet the guidelines set forth by the financial aid office are eligible for financial assistance. The BGS program also offers a scholarship through the Osher Reentry Scholarship Program to 20 recipients each year.
How will I benefit from a University of Miami education, and specifically the BGS degree?
The BGS Program allows students to enhance their job-related skills and focus on knowledge they need instead of devoting valuable time to prerequisites and mandatory classes. Total flexibility permits students to design a course curriculum perfectly suited to both their academic needs and their personal schedules, with the University of Miami’s expert instructors and vast resources guiding and supporting them along the way. Between classes, BGS students have access to all the student facilities and resources on UM’s beautiful Coral Gables campus. UM also has a large alumni network and a top-notch career center which can help BGS graduates update their resumes and cover letters, connect with local businesses, and explore various career paths and avenues of opportunity.
Is the program right for me?
The University of Miami BGS Program is perfect for adult students with families or full-time jobs who need flexibility when scheduling their college coursework. It is also ideal for those who started college previously but were unable to complete a degree, or for those who earned an associate degree but would like to enhance their resume and increase their hireability with a bachelor’s degree.
